Steenkamp earns her doctorate
Inspiring Namibian youth
“Do not limit yourself. Your potential is only revealed when you push beyond your comfort zone,” says Sanet Steenkamp, Namibia’s Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC), who recently earned her PhD in Education.Steenkamp’s journey is a story of passion, perseverance and discipline. Having completed her master’s degree at Rhodes University in 2002, she dreamed of one day returning to complete her PhD. After years of gaining experience in educational leadership, she embarked on the rigorous doctoral path in 2018, focusing on teacher leadership and inclusive education.
She says this is a field that is rare in Namibia. Her study highlighted how teachers, especially in resource and special schools, often lead with care and dedication far beyond their formal duties, shaping classrooms, schools, and communities alike.
The journey was not without challenges. Balancing her role as an executive director with her doctoral studies meant late nights, early mornings, and weekends spent reading and writing. “It was seven years of my life invested,” Steenkamp reflects. “From rocky, turbulent times to rewarding and triumphant moments.”
Yet she emphasises that her PhD was not only an academic accomplishment but also an emotionally fulfilling journey that kept her grounded and humble.
Steenkamp’s research was action-oriented, involving teachers directly through workshops where they developed tools and strategies, leading to real transformation in schools. The study revealed that teachers have strong agency, and when given the opportunity, they can lead beyond their classrooms and even across communities.
Looking ahead, Steenkamp is determined to publish her findings, making Namibia’s groundbreaking work accessible globally. “Other countries need to understand our constraints, our enabling factors, and how our teachers triumph despite challenges,” she explains.
To Namibian youth, she delivers a powerful message: “Do not restrict yourself. Do not allow others to determine your worth. Discipline and perseverance are key. Even when you don’t feel like it, keep pushing. Your potential is unlocked only when you challenge yourself.”
Her advice resonates beyond academics. Combining passion, perseverance, and discipline is what turns dreams into achievements. For Steenkamp, it was not just the grace of God that led to a PhD; it was countless hours of work, tenacity and a deep belief in her purpose.
As Namibia celebrates this milestone, Sanet Steenkamp’s story stands as a living example: with determination and discipline, no dream is too distant and no goal beyond reach.
