Unam talent dazzles at Commonwealth Fashion Show

The Unam Commonwealth Fashion Show featured designs by fashion students and alumni to not only showcase talent but also to promote appreciation for cultural diversity.
The University of Namibia's (Unam's) humanities department buzzed with anticipation as prepared to host an extraordinary event – the Unam Commonwealth Fashion Show. Commissioners from member countries including the UK, Zambia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Malaysia, South Africa, Nigeria and Tanzania graced the occasion, adding an air of international prestige to the affair.As the models emerged, they revealed a dazzling display of garments representing Commonwealth nations.
The British High Commissioner to Namibia, Charles Moore, took to the stage and said: "We're thrilled to unveil this stunning showcase of creativity."
The Zambian deputy high commissioner to Namibia, Lloyd Himaambo, was stunned at the craftsmanship on display, noting how each design masterfully captured the essence of its respective culture. "It's truly inspiring to witness such a brilliant fusion of traditions," he remarked.
“The fashion show was brilliant and eye-catching, and it is very apparent how the Commonwealth countries all came together in this show," he added.
Heritage and identity
Throughout the evening, the runway transformed into a vibrant stage of colours and textures, with garments ranging from traditional Ghanaian kente cloth to contemporary interpretations of Indian fashion wear. Each design told a story of heritage and identity, weaving together the diverse and stunning identities of the Commonwealth.
Among the talented designers showcased was Ester Iyambo, whose creations seamlessly blended elements of Namibian culture with those of her Commonwealth counterparts. "I feel immensely proud to be part of this event – stepping outside of my comfort zone and expressing my art," she said. She said her designs showcased the power of fashion to transcend borders.
As the show reached its peak, the audience erupted into applause, their enthusiasm echoing throughout the venue. For a brief moment, nationalities ceased to exist, replaced instead by a shared appreciation for artistry and innovation.
In his closing remarks, Moore expressed his gratitude to the Commonwealth Secretariat for their support in making the event possible. "Tonight, we've witnessed the transformative power of fashion in fostering cultural exchange and understanding," he said.
As guests mingled and exchanged compliments, it became evident that the impact of the fashion show extended far beyond the runway.
It was a literal demonstration of how different cultures can come together and showcase the undeniable beauty of different nations collectively through art.
