Lucas Matebge, the wood crafter
Surrounded by beautifully crafted wooden creations, the My.na Property team sat down with Lucas Matebge, the man behind the craftsmanship - from shelves and cupboards to custom-made furniture pieces.
Lucas shared how his love for woodworking began at home. He grew up watching his father and brother work with wood. “That is how the passion developed,” he said.
Seeing them build and create inspired him to follow the same path. What started as observation and learning gradually evolved into a lifelong passion. Today, that passion is visible in every piece he produces. For Lucas, woodworking is not simply about assembling materials; it is about transforming simple boards into something beautiful and lasting.
When it comes to custom orders, Lucas works efficiently. He said that once materials are available, assembling a piece can take as little as one or two days. Most custom projects are completed within three to four days, with the biggest delays usually caused by waiting for materials to be delivered.
“If we receive the materials today, we can finish tomorrow,” he said confidently. He even showed the My.na Property team items in his workshop that had been completed the previous day.
Pricing is often a concern for customers. Lucas explained that for custom-made pieces, he typically charges 30% of the material cost if the client supplies the materials. He believes his prices are fair and affordable, noting that he is among the most competitively priced craftsmen in Windhoek, and possibly Namibia.
Ongoing challenges
However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges. Many customers still attempt to negotiate prices, even when margins are already tight. He emphasised that supporting local businesses helps create jobs and grow the economy.
One of his biggest constraints is machinery. Lucas does not yet own large equipment to cut oversized boards and therefore relies on suppliers for this service, which can sometimes cause delays.
Competition does not intimidate him. “Our work speaks for itself,” he said.
According to Lucas, the way he and his team design and construct cupboards and furniture sets them apart from others in the industry. Most of his business comes through referrals; between 80% and 90% of his clients are referred by satisfied customers, reflecting the trust he has built.
The design process is central to his work. Many customers arrive with reference images, after which Lucas offers professional advice and creative input. He believes that most designs can be refined and enhanced. One cupboard he helped redesign even went viral on TikTok, demonstrating the impact of strong collaboration between client and craftsman.
Looking ahead, Lucas hopes to expand his business, particularly if he secures funding and a larger workspace.
He believes customised furniture holds special value. “When something is made just for you, it feels different,” he said. Whether it is a kitchen cupboard or a bedroom unit, a custom-made piece adds character and individuality to any home.
