DBikes: Pedalling towards community impact and growth

Empowering communities with affordable transport
Francouis Pretorius
Founded in 2014, DBikes began as a modest bicycle repair and sales shop under the name David Bicycles Repairs and Sales.
Located in a small container in Otjomuise’s 7de Laan, the early days were a mix of challenges and triumphs.
Limited space meant stocking enough bicycles and parts was difficult, yet the vision of David Augustu, the venture\'s founder, kept customers believing in the potential of his small workshop.
Augustu’s love for bicycles and his desire to create jobs fuelled the expansion, aiming not only to serve customers but also to give back to the community.
By 2016, the business moved to Khomasdal industrial stores and adopted the shorter, easier-to-remember name, DBikes. This rebranding not only simplified client referrals but also reflected the company’s growing ambition.
Top-of-the-range services
Today, DBikes offers a wide range of services, including the sale of new and second-hand bicycles, assembling, repairing, balancing rims, sealant top-ups, full bicycle servicing and even guided fun rides and tours for tourists around Windhoek.
The shop prides itself on sourcing high-quality parts from trusted local and international suppliers, testing each item before it reaches customers.
Affordability and quality service remain central, with clients praising DBikes for offering some of the best prices and service in Windhoek.
The majority of DBikes’ clients are casual riders, drawn by the affordable prices and community-focused approach.

Community impact
Beyond sales, DBikes actively supports the community by donating bicycles to local schools and offering significant discounts to struggling customers. Augustu sees cycling as a tool for empowerment, giving people access to affordable transport while promoting health and well-being.
Running a small business is never without challenges.
DBikes has faced limited funding for reinvestment, seasonal fluctuations in customer demand, and minimal government support for growth initiatives such as opening a training school for bicycle mechanics.
Despite these hurdles, one of the company’s proudest achievements is giving back to the community, inspiring people to care for and support each other.

Don’t give up
Looking ahead, DBikes has ambitious plans.
The business aims to establish a training school for bicycle mechanics, equipping Namibians with skills that generate income and open future opportunities.
Additionally, DBikes plans to organise events such as races and gradually expand its operations, ultimately aspiring to become a multinational brand.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Augustu shares simple but powerful advice: believe in yourself, work hard, research thoroughly and never limit your dreams. “Slowly but surely, as long as you don’t give up, you will get there,” he says.
DBikes is more than a bicycle shop. It is a community hub, a training ground, and a symbol of perseverance. With a blend of passion, quality service and a heart for giving back, the company continues to make a meaningful difference in Windhoek and beyond.
