The making of a dedicated nurse
Healing hands, steady heart
Nurse Selma Smilley Malwa underscores the importance of placing people at the centre of healthcare.
In an inspiring step forward for both her career and the community, Selma Smilley Malwa was appointed as an enrolled nurse at the Windhoek Central Hospital last August. Malwa, who is deeply committed to helping others, has built a remarkable career in healthcare, starting as a caregiver before pursuing a nursing degree at the I-Care Health Training Institute in 2020.Reflecting on her early experiences, Malwa recalls providing essential care to the elderly and infants. “It was an incredibly fulfilling role," she said. "But as time went on, I knew I wanted to make a deeper impact and expand my skills."
Her nursing education laid a strong foundation, but it was through hands-on experience during her clinical placements that she truly honed her skills. “I learned the importance of empathy, quick thinking and teamwork,” she explained. “Each experience prepared me for my role at the hospital.”
Now, as part of the Windhoek Central Hospital health team, Malwa’s responsibilities have expanded significantly.
She works alongside a dedicated group of professionals to shape healthcare policies and provide patient-centred care. “It’s been a rewarding challenge, and I’m learning so much every day,” she said.
Despite the hurdles she faces, Selma views each as an opportunity for growth.
Hands-on experience
Before her transition, Malwa spent valuable time directly caring for patients in various settings, including elder care homes and home care for the elderly and infants.
These experiences equipped her with essential skills in communication and stress management, allowing her to remain calm under pressure.
“The ability to empathise with patients is crucial,” she said. “It’s not just about their medical needs but also their emotional and psychological well-being.”
Genuine care
Beyond her professional duties, Malwa prioritises her well-being through family time and personal hobbies, such as reading her Bible, prayer, attending church on Sundays and taking long walks.
“These moments of peace are essential for maintaining my well-being, which helps me give my best at work.”
For those aspiring to follow in her footsteps, Malwa offers sage advice: “Embrace the challenges, but don’t lose sight of why you’re doing it. Always remember that healthcare is about the people you care for, not just the science.”
