The Children Life Change Centre and Kindergarten received food supplies and other commodities worth N$10 000.00 from the Capricorn Foundation through the Grotius Firm last Friday.
For the legal aid and professional ethics module in their fourth year, Unam Law School students are required to complete an impact project for assessment.
The students are then expected to go out and assess the needs in their neighbourhoods, choose a project, and then approach institutions and other stakeholders to secure funding for the chosen project.
The students mainly play a coordinating role.
On 9 August, the law school’s student group, the Grotius Firm, approached the Capricorn Foundation for possible collaboration and to support the Children Life Change Centre, an orphanage they identified after assessing various orphanages in Windhoek.
The Capricorn Foundation then internally reviewed the proposal and decided to partner with the Grotius Firm to support the centre and kindergarten, with a donation of mattresses, blankets, food, crockery and groceries worth N$10 000.
“The Grotius Firm identified the Children Life Change Centre and Kindergarten after consulting various orphanages in Windhoek. We learned that the orphanage has no monthly income, and since the Covid-19 lockdown, they could not attend to their field in the north, which was the orphanage’s main source of living. We then reached out to stakeholders to donate towards the orphanage for the betterment of their circumstances,” said Iyaloo Hamulungu, legal aid and professional ethics lecturer.
Marlize Horn, executive officer of the Capricorn Foundation, said “as connectors of positive change and a responsible corporate citizen, we aim to remain relevant by supporting initiatives that address community needs, in line with our focus areas which are: education and training; economic advancement; health; vulnerability projects which include hunger and poverty and; sustainability programmes.”
The Grotius Firm identified food supplies as the most urgent issue among the list of requirements for the orphanage.
“We hope that this sponsorship will make a positive impact on the Children Life Change Orphanage and Kindergarten to carry out its mission: to create a safe space for children, to provide health, recreation, and basic education for the over 60 children that it cares for” said Horn.
The Capricorn Foundation commended the Grotius Firm on their efforts of creating impact within their local communities and hope that the spirit of empathy will always be a part of their journey.
