City takes care of the elderly

Barry de Klerk – Mayor Muesee Kazapua and the City of Windhoek recently hosted an event for senior citizens as part of the mayoral outreach programme. Every year they hand out food and other items to assist needy community members in the festive season.

The city council also handed out food to the value of N$20 000 to different OVC centres in Windhoek at the ceremonial switching on of the city lights. “Christmas is the time of giving," Kazapua said. "However, the greatest gift we could exchange is to serve one another.”

Standard Bank Namibia, Ohltahver & List, Khomas Medical Centre and Matheus Amadhila, chairperson of the management committee of the City of Windhoek, contributed to the programme.

The beneficiaries were chosen by the regional councillors and included senior residents who reside in vulnerable communities. The mayor said they were looking into possibly writing off the debts of senior citizens to help them.

“As we celebrate this holiday season, I hope we will continue to spend time with family and friends. Let us use this time to reflect and count our blessings. We ask all Windhoek residents to remember your neighbours at this time of year, especially the elderly and those who live alone,” Kazapua said and wished all a happy, blessed Christmas and a prosperous 2017.”
