Criminal impersonation is on the increase
The Windhoek city police are asking residents to be on the lookout for people pretending to be officials or representatives of the municipality.According to the city police people impersonating officials or representatives from certain companies go around in residential areas claiming to install free shower heads as part of the water saving campaign. Some of these individuals also claim to install electricity saving bulbs for free.
When they are allowed into the house, they rob the occupants at gunpoint. The public is advised to refrain from allowing strangers into their homes; first confirm with the company involved or contact the police.
Burglaries are still a big concern for the police. On 9 October Commercial Investment Corporation Wholesale in the Northern Industrial Area was broken into and food items to the value of N$35 000 were stolen. An unknown number of suspects entered the building by cutting a hole in the roof.
According to witnesses a vehicle was used to transport the items from the scene. It was revealed that the items were sold on the street and a female suspect was arrested. A case of “in possession of stolen goods and house-breaking” has been opened.
On 9 October a suspect was found in possession of items stolen from the Wholesale. This led the police to the house of the suspect and the vehicle used to transport the stolen goods. The police also found three jukeboxes which the suspect could not account for. The serial number of one of the jukeboxes had been tampered with. The suspect was arrested.
At the corner of Otawa and Oslo Streets in Otjomuise, a male suspect broke open a door to gain access to a house. The neighbours spotted the burglar and alerted the police. The suspect has been arrested and detained at the Wanaheda police station.
In the Goreangab informal settlement a jukebox was stolen from a bar in Havana. The jukebox was mounted with a tracking device, which led the police to Havana where it was recovered. Car parts were also found on the premises and the owner of the premises was arrested.
