Fate of shack owners heard in High Court

A ruling in the urgent application over the demolition of a number of shacks in the 7de Laan informal settlement took place in the High Court yesterday and they were served with an eviction notice.

This application came after the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement argued that several homes in that area were illegally and unlawfully demolished in March, and they took the City of Windhoek to court.

Nampa reports that according to the leader of the AR, Job Amupanda, they will not stop fighting for the rights of their people. “We are prepared and we will not leave any stone unturned,” he said.

Other media reported that City Police spokesperson, Cillie Aula, said that police officials do not need a court order to evict residents who were found to be erecting shacks illegally on municipal land. “It should be made clear that we did not demolish shacks where people were residing in the area in question; we demolished shacks that were in the process of being erected,” Aula said.
