Housing a priority for CoW
Barry de Klerk – The mayor of Windhoek, Muesee Kazapua, recently stated that affordable housing remained a priority for the city council.“This year council will increase its efforts to provide better opportunities for residents of the city to find serviced land and build houses,” Kazapua said.
According to him the council will continue with a house testing plan that was set up last year. This will be done through the exploration of a demonstration housing project. The councillors will work through the challenges facing them.
The city councillors will also plan for future recreational areas within the city. According to Kazapua this will be the first year where they will start planning actively for and take steps to acquire open spaces on a proactive basis. He also stated they would keep the envisaged population growth in mind.
“This year, in partnership with our stakeholders, we will embark on the river work initiative,” said Kazapua.
The city management will also look into ways to improve public transport services. Overall the CoW and its management will look into improving all services this year, according to Kazapua.
“As a council, we recommit ourselves to pursuing good quality in development decisions and advocating continued improvement of service delivery initiatives,” said Kazapua.
Residents are urged to continue paying their municipal bills, as this is what keeps the CoW running.
“The continuous non-payment for municipality services by our residents will mean significantly less revenue for council over the coming years,” said Kazapua.
‘This poses serious challenges to council, as we try to deliver the many projects and services. This new financial environment means the choices we make about where to spend money in the community become more important than ever.”
