Let Sun Karros Daan Viljoen bring you closer to nature
With the holidays close at hand people are probably counting the days until the days filled with adventure, fun and time spent together with family and loved ones.Sun Karros Daan Viljoen was established to cater specifically for families and friends that yearn for outdoor adventures and quality time together. Here you will be surrounded by tranquility and natural beauty and time will simply cease to exist. Situated only 20km west of Windhoek on the C28 route, it is easily accessible.
The park covers a total area of approximately 3 946ha and offers a choice of two types of accommodation: 19 modern, stylish chalets on the banks of the Augeigas Dam and camping facilities.
The chalets comprise a main bedroom, bathroom with shower and a private patio and sport air-conditioning, a ceiling fan, a small safe, hairdryer, 220v charging facilities, satellite TV, free WiFi access, a writer’s table, a tea and coffee station with a small fridge (mini bar stocked on request), cutlery, crockery and basic kitchen utensils. Each private patio is furnished with tables and chairs, a sun umbrella and a BBQ.
The grass-covered camping terrace curves around the dam. Each campsite island is equipped with an open air BBQ area, washbasin, preparation area, 220v electricity and a site lamp. The three ablution facilities are of the same standard as the main lodge bathrooms, making this a popular camping destination.
Families can further indulge in a number of activities like hiking. The 3km “Wag ‘n Bietjie” trail, leads down to the Stengel Dam and is an easy walk for adults. The more energetic “Rooibos” trail takes hikers along the Augeigas Dam to the eastern highlands.
Those who prefer something less physical can travel along the 6.5km 4x4 self-drive game route and enjoy the area’s vegetation and large mammals include giraffe, mountain zebra, kudu, oryx, eland, red hartebeest, springbok, blue wildebeest, black-backed jackal, baboons and warthog. Birdwatchers can look for about 180 different species including Monteiro’s hornbill, crimson-breasted shrike, black eagle, fish eagle and the occasional black stork. Many endemic species occur along the rocky trails, including rock runners, carp’s black tit, white-tailed shrike and rosy-faced lovebirds.
Although Sun Karros Daan Viljoen is a private lodge, day visitors are welcome to enjoy breakfast, lunch and/or dinner at the Boma Restaurant and pool area. No day visitation fees are charged, but a minimal boma deposit of N$50 per person is payable on arrival. This deposit ensures entry into the lodge and use of the boma facilities. The full balance of the deposit is deducted from the final meal bill, but no remaining balance is refundable or transferable.
