Science in the spotlight
Yolanda Nel – Windhoek Gymnasium’s primary and high school impressed judges at the Khomas Regional Science Fair that took place last week, with the high school taking first place and the primary school third place.St. Paul’s College ended second overall in the category for secondary schools while Academia Secondary School was third. The awards for top primary schools went to the Amazing Kids Private Academy in first place and the Holy Cross Convent in second.
Hanna Murphy from St. Paul’s College was the winner in the category for plant science, while Lelan Beukes from Windhoek Gymnasium won in the animal science category.
Joana Ribeiro from Windhoek Gymnasium won the environmental science category. Her project was also the best secondary schools’ project. She received N$1 500 to use towards improving her project.
Friedrich Setzkom of St. Paul’s College was announced the winner in the energy and engineering category.
These students all received N$1000 to improve their projects.
In the primary phase, Tamara Platt of the Holy Cross Convent was announced the winner in the chemistry category, while Caelyn Beukes from the same school, presented the best project in the plant science category. Bernard van der Walt and Ewan van der Walt of Windhoek Gymnasium won the animal science category, while Nina Horn and Mia Brand were announced the winners in the physics and astronomy category.
Nikhila Phathi of Amazing Kids Academy had the best mathematics and statistics project while Todd Parker of St. Paul’s College won the ICT category. The best project in the human science category was awarded to Lujean de Vries of Suiderhof Primary School while Alessandri Kaura and Hilvia Hashoongo of the Holy Cross Convent won the environmental science category.
Windhoek Gymnasium scholar Raimo von Kuhne won the engineering and technology category and his work was also chosen as the best primary school project. Rith Musasa of St. Paul’s College won the energy and engineering category.
The students all received N$1000 to improve their projects while Raimo received an additional N$1 500.
