‘Why rush land conference?’ - Geingob

The second National Land Conference scheduled to take place this month, has been postponed to give people more time for further input.

This announcement was made by Pres. Hage Geingob last week, following a complaint by the Namibian Non-Governmental Organisations Forum (NANGOF), expressing fear that government did not perform consultations properly.

The letter also stressed that previous meetings on the land issue did not allow for input, although they were informative.

“I will study these concerns and if I detect that there is any truth, why should I rush it? The idea is to get proper input,” Geingob said. “Everybody is talking about land, so let’s take time to study it.”

Geingob said that some ministers are not happy with his decision to postpone the conference, but that people should be given time. “So why rush it?” he asked.

The second National Land Conference was scheduled to take stock of the achievements made since the first National Land Conference in 1991 and to establish what is needed to accelerate, and improve the implementation of recommendations made at the first one. – Nampa
