Namibian Youth under Siege
The growing crisis of drug abuse in Namibia has reached alarming levels, particularly among our young people. Across towns and communities, we are witnessing a disturbing rise in substance abuse that is destroying families, disrupting education, fuelling crime, and robbing our nation of its future leaders.
Drugs are not merely a social problem. They are a direct attack on the future of Namibia. Young learners are dropping out of school. Academic performance is declining. Youth unemployment is worsened by addiction. Criminal activities linked to drug abuse are increasing in our communities. If we do not act decisively, we risk raising a lost generation.
We therefore call for urgent and coordinated national action:
-Strengthened border control and surveillance to curb the influx of illegal substances into our country.
-Enhanced intelligence operations to dismantle drug trafficking networks.
-Stronger penalties for those who profit from poisoning our youth.
-Expansion of rehabilitation centres and accessible treatment programs.
-Nationwide school-based prevention campaigns.
-Community-driven reporting mechanisms to identify and eliminate local drug distribution points.
This is not a time for silence. It is a time for decisive leadership. Protecting our youth must become a national priority above politics, above personal interests, and above complacency. We cannot allow drugs to define the destiny of our young people. The future of Namibia depends on the choices we make today. We stand ready to work with government institutions, law enforcement agencies, schools, churches, parents, and civil society to confront this crisis head-on. The war against drugs is a war for the soul and future of our nation.
