Namibia's oil: Mastering our resources for a sovereign future

Namibia stands at the threshold of a transformative era. The recent oil and gas discoveries in the Orange Basin have done more than reveal vast natural resources; they have ignited a vital national conversation about our economic sovereignty and collective future.

As these resources begin to shape our horizon, the central question for every Namibian is no longer just what lies beneath our soil, but how we will manage it to benefit generations to come.

At the heart of this transition are Namibian companies leading the way in shaping a sustainable and locally anchored oil and gas industry. Africa Provider Offshore Services (APOS) is one such company, advocating for the creation of a sustainable industrial ecosystem built right here at home.

The mission is clear: Namibia welcomes international expertise, technology and capital, but participation must take place on a “level playing field”. True partnership is rooted in mutual respect and legal parity. All players, both domestic and foreign, must strictly adhere to Namibian taxation and labour laws. When global entities respect Namibia’s regulatory environment, they do more than sign contracts; they contribute to the national treasury and honour the host nation.

The roadmap

To navigate this complex new landscape, reliable information is essential. This is where Namibiaoilandgas.com has evolved its role. By publishing a biannual report, which is far more than a collection of data, Namibia is taking ownership of its information.

By providing insights into the sector’s development, the report allows Namibian stakeholders, entrepreneurs and citizens to observe the “heartbeat” of this emerging industry. It offers the transparency needed to ensure that our evolution from a nation that merely hosts an industry to one that masters it is guided by facts and strategic vision. This is essential for the long term as the sector expands and for safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.

An African proverb serves as a compass for this journey: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” In the high-stakes world of energy, unity is our greatest strength.

Our strength in this new industry lies in unity, as we form strategic consortia and share resources. This collaborative spirit is embodied by the work of the Contractors Oil and Gas Association of Namibia (COGANAM). Through cooperation, Namibian businesses can achieve the scale and capability required to compete for major contracts. Every Namibian worker trained and every local company engaged becomes a vital investment in our national “brain trust”.

Working together

Ultimately, by working together, we ensure that the wealth generated from Namibian resources remains within our borders, helping to build the schools, hospitals and infrastructure our communities need. It is through this collective commitment that we transition from being a nation that merely hosts an industry to one that truly masters it.

We are under no illusions: the path ahead is complex. History shows that every oil-producing nation faces challenges and makes mistakes during its development. Namibia will likely encounter its own missteps as the sector matures.

However, we have expertise, access to professionals, and we are not ‘flying blind’ as we forge a path for ourselves and other Namibian companies. First and foremost, we must ensure Namibian ownership, as there is profound dignity in ownership. There may be missteps, but they will be ours to make and, more importantly, ours to learn from. By maintaining control over our sector, we ensure that the lessons learned remain within the country, strengthening our institutions for future generations.

Through shared vision, strict compliance and a commitment to fairness, Namibia will do more than participate in the global energy market - we will lead it.
