Solving for tomorrow

How partnership is strengthening mathematics education and building Namibia’s future

Every child deserves the opportunity to dream without limits. Whether they aspire to become an engineer, entrepreneur, doctor, teacher, scientist or innovator, that journey often begins in the classroom, with a strong foundation in education. Among the subjects that shape future opportunities, mathematics remains one of the most powerful enablers of lifelong success. Yet for many Namibian learners, mathematics continues to be one of the greatest educational challenges. Many learners complete Grade 11 without achieving the mathematics requirements needed to pursue further studies or access opportunities at tertiary institutions. This challenge is further compounded by resource constraints in schools, including limited access to teaching materials, practical learning tools and opportunities for specialised teacher development.

However, improving mathematics outcomes cannot rest on learners alone. Teachers are at the heart of educational transformation. Equipping educators with the right knowledge, practical teaching methodologies and ongoing support creates a lasting impact that extends far beyond a single classroom. A confident, well-

supported teacher inspires confident learners, helping to build stronger educational outcomes year after year.

This is particularly important during Grades 10 and 11, where learners begin preparing for senior secondary assessments and making decisions that influence their access to tertiary education and future career opportunities. A strong foundation in mathematics at this stage can open doors to fields such as engineering, finance, technology, medicine, data science and many other professions that will contribute to Namibia’s future economy.

Recognising this need, the Namibia Mathematics Institute (NMI) is working to strengthen mathematics education outcomes across Namibia by supporting Grades 10 and 11 teachers and learners with practical training, mentorship and hands-on learning materials. The programme aims to improve mathematics performance by helping educators develop more effective teaching approaches while creating more engaging learning experiences that build learner confidence and interest in the subject.

Over the past five years, with the support of the FirstRand Namibia Foundation as its main sponsor, NMI has trained an average of 25 Grade 10 and 11 mathematics teachers from each of eight educational regions, reaching approximately 200 teachers who collectively impact an estimated 40,000 learners in classrooms across the country. Through these interventions, teachers are equipped with study guides and practical resources that support stronger mathematics teaching and learning outcomes.

The programme also seeks to address one of the underlying barriers to mathematics success: learner confidence. By providing practical mathematics teaching aids and hands-on resources, NMI helps change perceptions of mathematics from a subject associated with difficulty and failure into one where learners can develop curiosity, understanding and confidence. This collaborative approach reflects an important truth: lasting educational change requires partnership.

It is for this reason that the FirstRand Namibia Foundation is proud to support the important work being done by the Namibia Mathematics Institute. The Foundation believes that sustainable national development begins with investing in people, and education remains one of the most powerful tools for creating lasting social and

economic impact. Guided by six key pillars, the FirstRand Namibia Foundation works to address some

of Namibia’s most pressing developmental priorities: education and financial literacy, community and health development, skills and capacity development, environmental guardianship, arts and culture development, and sports development. Together, these focus areas reflect a commitment to creating opportunities that enable individuals and communities to thrive.

Within this broader vision, education remains a key priority. Quality education provides the foundation for economic growth, innovation and social mobility. It equips young Namibians not only to participate in the global economy but also to develop solutions for the challenges facing their own communities. For Namibia to become increasingly competitive on the regional and global stage, learners must have access to education that prepares them for a rapidly changing world.

Supporting mathematics education is therefore about far more than numbers. It is about nurturing problem-solvers, critical thinkers and future innovators. It is about giving learners the confidence to pursue opportunities they may never have imagined possible. It is about ensuring that every child has access to the support and resources needed to realise their potential. Equally important is the investment in teachers. Through practical training, improved methodologies and ongoing support, the Namibia Mathematics Institute creates an impact that extends beyond individual learners. Every teacher empowered through the programme has the potential to influence hundreds of learners throughout their career, creating a ripple effect that reaches schools, families and communities across Namibia.

The programme continues to expand its reach, with further implementation planned in regions such as Kharas and Oshana in 2026, ensuring that more teachers and learners have access to practical mathematics support and resources. As Namibia continues to pursue inclusive economic growth and sustainable development, collaboration between the private sector, government, schools and communities will remain essential. No single organisation can transform education alone, but together, meaningful progress becomes possible.

The partnership between the FirstRand Namibia Foundation and the Namibia Mathematics Institute demonstrates what can be achieved when organisations unite around a shared purpose: creating opportunities for Namibian learners to succeed. Because every equation solved builds confidence. Every teacher empowered strengthens a classroom. Every learner inspired brings Namibia one step closer to a

future driven by knowledge, innovation and possibility.

Investing in mathematics education today is ultimately an investment in tomorrow’s Namibia: a future where learners are equipped with the skills, confidence and opportunities to realise their potential, contribute to national growth and help build a globally competitive Namibia for generations to come.
