Vigilance key against scammers
The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has taken note of the rise in online scams, highlighting the need for public awareness on SIM card registration, online safety and digital security.Mandatory SIM card registration strengthens national security, helps combat crime, and protects consumers from online and cyber threats. By establishing a verified digital identity, authorities can trace criminal activity involving mobile devices. This approach aligns with international best practice, with over 158 countries, including Namibia’s neighbours, having implemented similar measures.
Benefits
SIM registration offers more than security. It provides access to digital services such as mobile banking and online shopping, safeguards digital identity and protects consumer rights. It also enables number portability, allowing users to retain their mobile numbers when switching providers, promoting competition and efficiency in the telecommunications sector.
CRAN actively supports public compliance through awareness campaigns in major towns, stakeholder engagement, and the SIM Registration Committee, which oversees implementation. These initiatives aim to educate the public on registration procedures, dispel misinformation, and encourage safe digital practices.
Law enforcement powers to investigate scams lie with the Namibian Police. Under Regulation 5 of the Communications Act (No. 8 of 2009), NamPol officers must obtain judicial authorisation before requesting information from telecom providers. “The regulatory framework ensures consumer privacy is respected while enabling law enforcement to act decisively against criminal activity,” said Mr. Mufaro Nesongano, CRAN Executive: Communication and Consumer Relations.
CRAN advises consumers to:
• Register SIM cards as required to establish verified digital identities.
• Stay alert to potential scams, especially messages or calls requesting personal or financial information.
• Use the benefits of registration, such as secure mobile banking and online services.
• Protect digital identities by avoiding sharing sensitive information on unsecured platforms.
CRAN urges all Namibians to remain vigilant online. Collective awareness and responsible digital behaviour are key to creating a safer and more secure online environment. For further information or assistance, visit www.cran.na.
