The Namibia Beach Volleyball Hub and Swakopmund Beach Volleyball Academy served off the first leg of their inaugural eight-tournament series last weekend, crowning the first champions in Swakopmund.

Hosted at The Mole in Swakopmund, the beach volleyball (BVB) tournament attracted 17 two-a-side teams across the men’s (eight), women’s (five) and boys U19 (four) divisions, all vying for medals and prizes.

The girls’ U19 teams were merged into the women’s division to complete the draw.

In the men’s division, the duo of Daniel Seidler and Otto Nahambo cruised to a flawless title run, winning all their matches in straight sets (2-0).

Seidler and Nahambo began their dominant campaign in the group stage, where they overcame Group B opponents Kjell Janke and Alex von Wietersheim, Mark Brinkmann and his son Yenik, as well as Zaine April and Jonas Ndakevondjo, to advance to the knockout stage.

In the semi-final, they beat Donovan Gee and Kopano Murangi 2-0 before repeating the scoreline against Conrad Johannes and Alehandro Gillmert in the final to claim the title.

Johannes and Gillmert settled for silver, with bronze going to Janke and von Wietersheim.

Women’s champions

The women’s title went to Julia Shaanika and Patricia Uusiku.

The division was played in a round-robin format, with the eventual winners recording straight-set victories over Albertina Matthew (partnered with stand-in players), Anna von Wietersheim and Hannah Rust, as well as Dania Diekmann and Katja Pfaffentaler.

The only pair to take a set off Shaanika and Uusiku were eventual silver medallists Maggie Heita and Meriam Mendos, who pushed them to three sets (2-1). Diekmann and Pfaffentaler claimed bronze.

Other champions

Boys U19: 1 Petrus Petrus/Charlie Shikongo, 2 Robin Senke/Veon van Wyk, 3 Christopher Miller/Daniel Miller.

Standard on the rise

In a statement issued yesterday, Namibia Beach Volleyball Hub founder Joachim Schuckmann said the standard of play across the divisions had improved compared to previous events.

“This can be attributed to the amount of work done by the Swakopmund Beach Volleyball Academy, but it was not only what happened on the sand that drew attention.

“The introduction of dedicated software as part of the Namibia Beach Volleyball Hub’s growing ecosystem transformed the experience for players and fans.

“Digital sign-up, live scoring, transparent rankings and seamless scheduling gave the event a professional feel,” said Schuckmann.

Improvements underway

He added that despite the technological advancements, there is still room for improvement, confirming the rollout of a digital on-court score assistant app, MatchFlow (beta phase), along with additional player amenities.

“The benefits are already underway, with the explicit goal of making elite-level event standards the norm at all tournaments,” said Schuckmann.

The next leg of the series is scheduled for 6 June in Swakopmund.
