FNB Insurance drives DTS volleyball for all
The vibrant atmosphere at the FNB Insurance DTS Volleyball for All tournament once again lit up the DTS Sports Club, as hundreds of players and supporters gathered for one of the country’s most popular sporting and social events.
In the overall competition, Juxta emerged as champions, finishing ahead of Bank of Namibia in second place, while Nampro Eagles secured the bronze medal.
In the competitive four-a-side category, RFP – Goats claimed top honours, followed by Naakaise – Tigers in second place and Oshi – Vibe in third. Control of Defeat finished in fourth position.
The full-day tournament attracted a large turnout, with 192 six-a-side teams and 24 four-a-side teams participating in what organisers described as one of the biggest editions of the event. Corporate teams, social players and competitive squads battled it out across multiple courts, creating a lively festival of volleyball.
Heiko Kesselmann, the tournament director, said the event continues to grow in popularity and scale.
“It is always a full house with 192 six-a-side teams and 24 four-a-side teams, which means we have about 216 teams here at DTS in Olympia,” he said.
The matches began at 08:00 and continued throughout the day, with around 520 games played on 20 courts. Organisers expected close to 4 000 spectators and participants to pass through the venue during the event.
Kesselmann explained that the tournament format has remained largely unchanged over the years due to its continued success.
“We did not do anything different because you never change a winning team,” he said, adding that the event has reached its capacity in terms of both team entries and spectators.
One of the few additions to this year’s programme was evening entertainment, with a live band scheduled to perform at 20:00, encouraging players and supporters to stay on and celebrate after the final matches.
Ileni Shithigona, marketing manager for FNB Namibia Insurance, said the event combines competitive sport with a family-friendly festival atmosphere.
She noted that while the professional four-a-side teams compete for their own prizes, the six-a-side division focuses more on participation and enjoyment, with various fun prizes sponsored by partners and the main sponsor.
Shithigona added that the event also offered activities for spectators, including interactive games, prize wheels and a children’s play area, making it an occasion for the whole family.
With its mix of competitive sport, corporate participation and social fun, the DTS Volleyball for All tournament once again demonstrated why it remains one of Namibia’s largest and most anticipated one-day sporting events.
