CRAN celebrates international girls in ICT day
The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) proudly celebrated International Girls in ICT Day 2026 on 23 April 2026 at A. Shipena Secondary School in Windhoek, emphasising the vital role of young women in shaping Namibia’s digital future. Emilia Nghikembua, CRAN’s Chief Executive Officer highlighted the theme, “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future,” urging girls and young women to explore opportunities in information and communication technologies.
“Technology is transforming our societies, and AI is at the forefront of this change,” stated Nghikembua. She emphasised Artificial Intelligence’s (AI) potential to revolutionise education, healthcare, and economic development, while also underscoring the importance of responsible and ethical use. Nghikembua reminded attendees that diversity fuels innovation, noting that historically, technology fields have been male dominated. “When girls participate in designing and leading digital initiatives, we create solutions that reflect the needs of our entire society. I encourage all young girls to pursue careers in ICT, whether as developers, data scientists, cybersecurity experts, or entrepreneurs,” added Nghikembua.
CRAN reaffirmed its commitment to digital inclusion by announcing a donation of N$ 53,000.00 to A. Shipena Secondary School’s ICT laboratory. This contribution aims to support the school’s impressive academic achievements and bolster digital learning opportunities for students.
“Do not be afraid of technology. Be curious, explore, question, and imagine how you can use ICT to improve the world,” urged Mrs. Nghikembua. She emphasised that the future of technology depends on the ideas and leadership of young women, urging them to seize the opportunities ahead.
The event brought together learners, educators, and key stakeholders to celebrate the achievements of young girls in ICT and to inspire continued participation in Namibia’s digital economy. CRAN remains dedicated to fostering an inclusive, innovative, and ethical digital landscape, empowering the next generation of female tech pioneers.
