From film student to role model
Georgina Likukela is making her mark on Namibia’s film industry with passion, vision and a deep commitment to her community. The young filmmaker recently began a new chapter in her career when she was appointed programme coordinator at the Filmmakers Association of Namibia (FAN).
What makes this achievement particularly notable is that Georgina is still a student at the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF). Despite this, her talent, dedication and potential have already been recognised.
“Being selected while I am still a student made me realise that my purpose and contribution matter now,” she says. “It is a great honour, but also a humbling experience, because this role is not just about me. It is about service and opening doors for others.”
In her role at FAN, Georgina focuses on promoting authentic Namibian stories and supporting emerging filmmakers. Her goal is to help build a more sustainable and inclusive film industry in which young creatives are seen, guided and empowered.
“MTF has given me so much, and I want to pass on that same sense of support to others,” she explains.
Georgina says her growth as a storyteller has been shaped largely by her training. “Writing screenplays has taught me how to find structure, while directing has shown me the importance of empathy, leadership and emotional honesty. I am also learning how the industry works and how to approach it with technical confidence.”
While she is optimistic about the future of Namibia’s creative sector, she is also realistic about its challenges. “There is incredible talent, but not always enough training, mentorship or access to opportunities. We need stronger networks and partnerships to make creative careers sustainable.”
Her commitment extends beyond her roles at MTF and FAN. Georgina is also the driving force behind Creatives Coming Out, an annual development programme that empowers creative people in rural areas. This year, the initiative launched in her home region, the Zambezi region.
“The aim is to equip people of all ages with the skills and knowledge to turn their creative talents into sustainable income,” she says.
With her passion, perseverance and clear vision, Georgina is not only realising her own dreams, but also helping to pave the way for others.
