Mauriza flies Namibian flag on Uhuru
On Women’s Day on August 9 at around 09:00, Namibia's Mauriza Fredericks reached Uhuru Peak of Kilimanjaro at 5 895 meters above sea level with 19 other women.“It was part of the Trek4Education25 expedition that had 21 members, including Saray Khumalo, the leader and first African woman to climb Mount Everest,” the adventurous Fredericks told Network Media Hub.
There were 20 women and one man, who had accompanied his wife.
Mauriza was the only Namibian in the group that included South Africans, Americans, Zambians, Britons and Dutch. They braved the Lemosho route in Tanzania in eight days in the breathtaking snowy landscape of Kilimanjaro.
When asked how she felt, she said she was overcome with emotion. “I cried like a baby all the way from base camp to Uhuru Peak, because the mountain required a different level of vulnerability, just as it required me to give up my own strength and trust in the inner workings of the Lord, the rhythm of the porters, guides and teammates, and to show the same compassion to those around me.”
Mauriza, a Windhoeker who is known in Namibia for her velvety voice as a radio presenter, is a marketing manager of corporate affairs and sustainability at Old Mutual Namibia.
“Anything is possible with hard work, dedication and partnership,” she said. – [email protected]
