During a trip with tourists along the coast this past weekend, a local tour guide lost control of his vehicle and rolled down a dune into the ocean where he is thought to have drowned.
Chad Wratten (53) was alone in his vehicle while his passengers - five tourists - explored the area on foot. The incident took place on Friday between 08:00 and 10:00 at Sandwich Harbour, about 50 km south of Walvis Bay.
According to Adj. Comm. Erastus Iikuyu, the Namibian police's coordinator of crime investigations in the Erongo region, the police managed to remove Wratten's body from the vehicle.
"The vehicle is still in the water. His body was taken to the Walvis Bay mortuary for a post-mortem," Iikuyu said at the weekend.
His next of kin, who mainly live in South Africa, have been informed of his death.
The incident happened only two months after a young girl was killed and three others were seriously injured when a vehicle overturned at Dune 7 in Walvis Bay.
There were five people in the vehicle and the deceased was a 13-year-old girl. The 21-year-old driver was allegedly following another vehicle when his vehicle got stuck on the way to the summit. The driver allegedly stopped and tried to get the vehicle out of the sand, but it began slipping due to the loose sand, overturned and started rolling down the dune. The young deceased was flung from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. – [email protected]
