New elephant herd in Ehra area
The team from the elephant conservation group in the northwest of the country, Elephant Human Relations Aid (Ehra), recently received reports of an elephant herd moving through their project area without being fitted with collars.“For several weeks they had been roaming between settlements, which piqued our curiosity,” Ehra wrote on social media.
Since one of Ehra’s goals is to identify and monitor all free-roaming elephants in their region, the team set out on several patrols to track them down. “After days in the field and hours of observation, we returned with clear ID photos, confirming a new herd for our records.”
The herd has now been added to Ehra’s growing elephant database, helping them better understand population movements, trends and dynamics across Namibia’s desert landscape.
“Each new identification brings us one step closer to ensuring the long-term protection of these incredible elephants,” Ehra says.
Ehra continues to work closely with other organisations and government partners to monitor these movements and better understand what drives them. – [email protected]
