Turning tradition into opportunity
The Capricorn Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting self-sufficient communities and economic development through its renewed partnership with the Omba Arts Trust, benefiting 600 rural artisans across Omaheke, Zambezi and Ohangwena.
Recently, the Capricorn Foundation contributed an additional N$183 000 to the Omba Arts Trust, a Namibian non-profit organisation with over 30 years of experience supporting artisans in rural and marginalised communities, particularly San communities. The trust focuses on cultural preservation, fair-trade craft development, and sustainable livelihoods.
“Since 2023, the Capricorn Foundation has been a key partner of the Omba Arts Trust. Our support helps provide raw materials, skills development, training and market access,” said foundation head Veripura Muukua.
Benson Kuzai, Director of Omba Arts Trust, expressed his thanks, saying: “The Capricorn Foundation’s commitment empowers artisans, strengthens livelihoods, and ensures the sustainability of our work. We are deeply grateful for this valued partnership.”
Furthermore: “Our craft projects foster unity, restore community connections, and help preserve cultural heritage for future generations. Artisans also train and inspire younger community members, ensuring traditions continue.”
Through Omba, artisans have exhibited locally and internationally, including major markets in the United States. These opportunities instil pride, purpose and motivation, contributing to well-being and reducing vulnerability to social challenges. Over the past two financial years, more than N$4 million has been reinvested directly into communities through craft purchases, workshops, and training initiatives.
