International Day of Families commemorated

SOS Children’s Villages Namibia joins the Namibian nation in celebrating the International Day of Families observed on 15 May every year.
This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993.
In a media release, SOS Children’s Villages Namibia said that on its 30th anniversary (1993 – 2023), the day is being commemorated under the theme “Families and Demographic Change”, which is premised to raise awareness of the impact of demographic trends on families. These trends include population ageing, migration and urbanisation.
For children, these are social factors that potentially contribute to child exploitation, child abuse, trafficking and child neglect, particularly where there are no adequate family-orientated safety nets. Access to basic necessities like food, shelter, education, and healthcare are among the ingredients that can address and secure the future of the child.
SOS Children’s Villages Namibia's family-like care programme provides a home to children in need of parental care, enabling them to access a loving and nurturing environment.
As the world commemorates the International Day of Families, SOS Children’s Villages call for the need to provide children with protection, emotional support and guidance to achieve their goals.
SOS Children’s Villages Namibia believes in systems that strengthen families and communities to avoid separation while concretising the family unit. Strong families provide a foundation for a healthy and prosperous society.
On this day, the diversity of families is celebrated, while the challenges they face around the world, particularly in Namibia are acknowledged.
Families’ love, support, and guidance are critical to helping children reach their full potential. Thus it is of paramount importance to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and loving family environment.
