Serving up food and hope

On 21 June 2025 – the eve of the longest night of the year – twenty Capricorn Group volunteers, fondly known as the ChangeMakers, brought warmth in more ways than one to the Family of Hope Services in Havana, Windhoek.
As part of their “Winter Warmers” drive, they dished up steaming homemade soup to the children and staff. But it wasn’t just about food. It was about presence, kindness and connection.
From mid-morning, the ChangeMakers did what they do best: show up with full hearts. They knelt to chat with little ones, shared crayons and laughter, and swapped stories over soup. Football games echoed with cheerful shouts of “Goal!” while colouring books became canvases for dreams. It was a cold winter’s day turned into something beautiful — a shared moment of joy.
This initiative reflects Capricorn Group’s culture of purpose-driven volunteerism. ChangeMakers have previously painted community centres, donated warm clothing, and uplifted early childhood centres. This time, it was about simply being there with open hands and warm soup, reminding children that someone cares.
The effort aligns with key UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): fighting hunger (SDG 2), promoting well-being (SDG 3), engaging employees meaningfully (SDG 8), and building strong community partnerships (SDG 17).
“It’s not just about soup,” said one volunteer. “It’s about letting these kids know they matter.”
Family of Hope Services has long been a sanctuary for vulnerable youth, offering safety and support. For the ChangeMakers, the day was a heart-stirring reminder that even small acts can have a big impact.
As Capricorn Group’s Marlize Horn put it, “These moments echo. When we give our time and kindness, we help build real community.”
Because sometimes, a warm cup of soup carries the quiet weight of hope.
