African Stars face uphill battle after narrow Pirates defeat
Orlando Pirates secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Namibia’s African Stars in the first leg of their CAF Champions League Second Preliminary Round tie at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone on Saturday.
Tshepang Moremi scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute to give the South African giants an advantage ahead of the return leg next weekend, leaving African Stars with work to do to keep their continental campaign alive.
Pirates started brightly, creating several opportunities as they looked to take control of the tie early. However, the Soweto side struggled to convert their chances, with striker Yanela Mbuthuma missing two promising opportunities in the opening half.
African Stars showed resilience in defence, making it difficult for their opponents to find a breakthrough. Goalkeeper Mervin Kasetura was called into action as Pirates continued to apply pressure.
Despite the visitors enjoying much of the attacking play, African Stars remained organised and managed to keep the score level throughout the opening 45 minutes.
The teams went into the half-time break locked at 0-0, with Pirates needing a stronger second-half performance to turn their dominance into a lead.
The Buccaneers continued to push after the restart, with Mbuthuma presented with another opportunity when he found himself one-on-one with Kasetura. The African Stars goalkeeper did well to deny the striker, keeping his side in the contest.
African Stars also had moments going forward but struggled to capitalise on their opportunities as Pirates maintained their search for the opening goal.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 75th minute when Moremi found the back of the net to put Pirates ahead. His goal proved decisive in a physically demanding encounter played in the heat of the Botswana capital.
The goal forced African Stars to push for an equaliser, but Pirates defended resolutely in the closing stages to protect their slender advantage until the final whistle.
The result gives Pirates a one-goal cushion heading into the second leg at Orlando Amstel Arena next weekend. The South African side will be confident of completing the job, while African Stars must produce a stronger attacking display to overturn the deficit.
With a place in the CAF Champions League group stage at stake, the return fixture promises to be a crucial test for the Namibian champions as they seek to keep their continental ambitions alive.
