In a significant milestone for regional sports development, the Central North Volleyball Association (CNVA) League made its debut in Okakarara, bringing competitive volleyball action to the town for the very first time. Despite substandard court conditions, the event was warmly embraced by the local community, marking a proud moment for the town’s sporting history. The league fixtures, played over the weekend, drew teams from across the central northern regions, including Grootfontein and Otjiwarongo. The event was characterised by a strong sense of sportsmanship and unity, with players and supporters alike contributing to the lively atmosphere. Local volleyball enthusiasts – especially the youth – turned out in impressive numbers to cheer on their home side, the Okakarara Volleyball Club, relishing the rare opportunity to witness high-level volleyball in their town.
However, the excitement of the occasion was somewhat tempered by the inadequate state of the volleyball court, which lacked basic features such as a proper playing surface, standard markings and regulation-height poles. Match officials and teams were forced to make on-the-spot adjustments to ensure the smooth running of the games.
Speaking after the weekend’s action, CNVA chairperson Joseph Hamunyela commended all involved and reiterated the association’s commitment to expanding the sport. “Bringing the league to Okakarara is part of our broader strategy to take volleyball to the people and promote inclusivity in sport,” he said. “This is a big step forward for us and for Okakarara. We are aware of the infrastructural challenges, but this is just the beginning. Our presence here signals a commitment to growing volleyball in every corner of the central northern regions.”
The CNVA has since appealed to local authorities and potential sponsors to assist in upgrading Okakarara’s sports facilities, aiming to meet the minimum standards required for both league and national competitions.
Despite the challenges, the matches proceeded successfully, with teams showcasing both resilience and talent. The league’s presence in Okakarara is expected to ignite greater interest in volleyball among young people and spur calls for improved sports infrastructure in the area.
