Corporate volleyball returns to Tiger Reef
Thirty-six corporate teams will contest the fourth annual Corporate Volleyball Tournament at Tiger Reef in Swakopmund today and tomorrow, with 216 players scheduled to play 116 games on six beach courts.
The event opens this evening with a registration dinner and team presentations from 18:00. Games start at 08:00 on Saturday and run through the day, with quarterfinals and semifinals expected from about 16:00.
"With 116 games, there is meticulous planning that needs to take place, and every single game is timed to the minute," said organiser JP Archer.
The tournament has grown each year since its start.
"In 2023, we started with nine teams at the yellow bus. 2024, we added up to 24 teams that we played at Pro-Ed. 2025 was a big year. That was 30 teams playing, and the host venue was Tiger Reef," Archer said.
Teams of six play four at a time, and one woman must be on court at all times. Games last about 15 minutes, with points accumulated to determine the knockout rounds.
Organisers expect about 1 200 attendees. The day includes a fun run, more than 30 vendor stalls, and a children's entertainment area.
Workplace levelling
Archer said the event mixes competition with workplace levelling.
"This is a day where you can actually bring from the guy that cleans the office and makes your tea and coffee to the highest executive that there is to join in as one team," he said.
He said the tournament contributes between N$20 000 and N$30 000 each year to upcoming sports stars, and pointed to the event's spending impact on the town.
"Economically, you're putting money into this town that makes it thrive. We're talking about places to stay. We're talking about the food and drinks, the vendors that will be here," he said.
Prize money will be awarded, along with prizes for the best-dressed team, best cheering team and a lucky draw. Sponsors include Lighthouse Group, Food Lovers Market, Bank Windhoek, G4S, Dr Weder, Kruger & Haikali and others.
