Golden Boxing opens with knockout spectacle
Martin Kambalili produced a statement performance on Saturday night, stopping Gabriel Shimweefeleni in the seventh round to headline a successful debut for Golden Boxing Promotions at the YetuYama Centre in Katutura.
The inaugural professional boxing tournament, fully sponsored by CastleBet, featured five bouts and showcased a mixture of emerging and experienced Namibian talent.
Kambalili, fighting out of Swakopmund, lived up to the expectations placed on him by promoter Tobias Naule, who had identified the middleweight as a boxer with the potential to reach the international stage.
The 72.57kg middleweight contest was scheduled for eight rounds, but Kambalili brought the fight to an early conclusion with a seventh-round knockout.
The main event capped an evening that produced plenty of action, including an explosive performance from Divas Namugongo, who dropped Reinold Matheus three times in the opening round before securing the stoppage.
In the other bouts, Thomas Ishidhimbwa defeated Shanyengange Shiimi by unanimous decision, after Shiimi was unable to continue into the final round, while David Johannes earned a unanimous decision victory over Erastus Fillemon in their 69kg catchweight contest.
The result of the opening bout between Jonas Jonas and Andreas Endjala was not included in the information provided.
CastleBet proud of partnership
CastleBet representative Ray Kumwenda praised the quality of the fighters and the organisation of the inaugural tournament, saying the event had provided an opportunity to showcase local talent.
"We saw very good boxers come through. We saw very good talent, especially the last two fights went all the way, which shows you that there was a lot of endurance and the fighters were well prepared," Kumwenda said.
While admitting that the organisers would have preferred a bigger turnout, Kumwenda said CastleBet remained proud of its involvement.
"As an inaugural tournament, I think it gives us a lot of joy and pride. We are very proud of what we've done today and we're hoping this is the first one of many to come."
Kumwenda also raised the possibility of future boxing contests between Namibian and Zambian fighters, pointing out that CastleBet is also involved in supporting boxing in Zambia.
Only the beginning
For Naule, the event provided valuable lessons as he begins his journey as a professional promoter.
He said there was plenty to learn from staging his first tournament, but the talent and exciting finishes had given him confidence that Golden Boxing Promotions can grow.
"A lot was learned from my first boxing event. We saw some exciting talent and we were blessed with some knockouts, so this is only the beginning," Naule said.
Kambalili, meanwhile, thanked CastleBet for giving the fighters an opportunity to showcase their skills and praised Naule for putting the event together.
The inaugural tournament marks the first step for Golden Boxing Promotions, with Naule now looking to build on the experience and create further opportunities for boxers from academies across Namibia.
