Jorine Krugel and Ru-Wayne Bezuidenhout once again came to the fore after dominating the senior divisions at African Genesis Archery (AGA) Namibia’s Roots Gymnasium Ranking Shoot in Stampriet last weekend.

At the recent tournament, 113 senior, junior and cub archers from across the country descended on Stampriet to take aim in the Bullseye and Animal Target rounds, which carried a combined maximum score of 1 200 for school-going archers.

Non-school-going archers competed in the Adult Archery Group (AAG), where the combined maximum score was 900.

Senior winners

Krugel’s gold medal in the senior girls’ category came at home, as she is a learner at Roots Gymnasium. She posted an overall score of 1 107 to claim gold.

Windhoek High School (WHS) archer Zeanette Jacobs took silver with the second-best score of 1 064, ahead of Berg-Op Academy’s Lume Kolver, who claimed bronze with 1 049.

Bezuidenhout of Windhoek Afrikaans Private School (Wap) dominated the senior boys’ category with 1 149 to claim gold ahead of schoolmate Willem van der Merwe, who took silver with 1 136.

Third place went to Oliver Rothkegel of Central Archery Club (CEAC), who posted 1 126 to secure bronze, just one point ahead of Ashton Ntsamba of Community Hope School (CHS), who finished fourth with 1 125.

Junior, cub winners

The following archers claimed top honours in the junior division.

Girls: 1 Jeandrie van der Merwe (Wap; 1 057), 2 Donaline Pieterson (CHS; 999), 3 Martmarie van der Merwe (Wap; 989).

Boys: 1 Ben Rothkegel (CEAC; 1 100), 2 Wandre Fest (Roots; 1 094), 3 Melzario Gariseb (CHS; 1 015).

The cub archers competed only in the Bullseye round, which had a maximum score of 300.

Girls: 1 Olivia Sakeus (Windhoek Christian Academy; 196), sole competitor.

Boys: 1 Johan de Jager (Roots; 230), 2 Ebert Venter (Roots; 164), only competitors.

League winners

The league competition, where schools are pitted against one another and ranked according to their top four archers from a ranking shoot, also produced tight competition.

Here, the scores of the top archers are combined to provide a team total for the event and an overall total from all league events held so far.

The Roots Ranking Shoot saw WHS top the senior league standings with a total of 4 370, followed by CHS in second place with 4 353 and Walvis Bay Private School (WBPS) third with 4 133.

The junior league was topped by WAP with 3 967, followed by Roots with 3 657 and CHS with 3 617.

After each ranking shoot, the winning school is awarded 32 points, second place receives 30 and third place gets 28, with each subsequent position receiving two points fewer as the points contribute to the overall league standings.

The senior standings have CHS and WHS tied on 142 points, with Wap third on 140. The junior league is led by Wap on 158, followed by CHS on 150 and Roots on 114.

AAG winners

Parents and individuals outside the school system also competed in the Adult Archery Group.

Women: 1 Marionette de Waal (WBPS; 835), 2 Corlia Krugel (Roots; 813), 3 Anielka Hayward (Wap; 785).

Men: 1 Berend Blom (Moria; 848), 2 Delron Gaoseb (Wap; 846), 3 Paul van der Merwe (Wap; 832).

Celebrating achievements

Roots Gymnasium representative Corlia Krugel said the ranking shoot saw archers brave chilly conditions on the school’s rugby field, where the event was held.

“Despite the icy start, the action on the shooting range quickly heated up as archers showcased their precision and skill. The competition was intense, with an impressive total of 17 scores of 50 achieved by 11 archers,” said Krugel.

“Beyond competition, archers, parents and members of the local community were treated to a traditional braai at the school’s clubhouse to share stories and celebrate the day’s achievements.”

The next ranking shoot of the year will be held at Berg-Op Academy on 27 June.
