Meyer names Jewels squad for Pent Series
Debmarine Desert Jewels head coach Julene Meyer has named her provisional squad for the Pent Series, scheduled for next month at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, following trials hosted by Netball Namibia in Windhoek on Friday.
The Pent Series will form part of the country’s preparations for the Africa Regional Qualifier, set for Kenya from 19 to 26 September.
The qualifier will determine the remaining African places for the 2027 Netball World Cup, which will be held in Sydney, Australia, from 25 August to 5 September next year.
Meyer confirmed to media queries that South Africa and Uganda have already qualified for the global showpiece, leaving Namibia and the rest of the chasing pack to fight for the remaining two African spots.
This makes the Pent Series an important platform for Meyer to test combinations, assess depth and sharpen the squad before the continental assignment.
Provisional squad
The provisional squad consists of 15 players, with three training partners also included in the wider group.
The shooters selected are Louise Kausehue of Extreme, Loide Kanyolo of Namibian Correctional Service (NCS), Rejoice Kambonge of Extreme and Ellisia Hambongo of NCS.
In midcourt, Meyer has called up Rosa Gowases of NamPol, Loide Hanyanya of Tigers, Monica Gomases of NCS, Elmerien Haoses of NCS and Imbileni Frans of NamRA.
The defensive unit includes Melitta Hunga of Eastern Chiefs, Grace Matyayi of Unam Ogongo, Mwale Mulenamaswe of NCS, Sunshine Murangi of NCS, Lydia David of Okamwandi and Cornelia Mupenda of Fireballs.
The three training partners are Tilly Kamati of Unam Ogongo, Desdemona Tjirera of Extreme and Rosalia Nanghonda of NamPol.
NCS has the strongest representation in the provisional squad with six players, while Extreme contributed three players. Unam Ugongo has one player in the provisional squad and one training partner.
The final squad is expected to be trimmed closer to the Pent Series, where the country will be looking to build momentum ahead of the September qualifiers.
