Mitton hooks 36th Angling Bonanza winner
A feast of fins and fun
Anglers went in search of the much sought after Angling Bonanza catch and the massive reward attached to it.
The 36th Angling Bonanza, organized by the Henties Bay-based Penguin Angling Club and held at the Henties Bay Sports Club, proved to be yet another resounding success. The annual Angling Bonanza in Henties Bay, continues to attract avid anglers, celebrating both skill and camaraderie right next to the ocean. The festival is the largest of its kind in Namibia and attracts scores of anglers eager to reel in the Bonanza fish, a lucrative pursuit with a cash prize totaling N$20,000. The competition features various categories, each offering substantial rewards for anglers showcasing their skills.
The highlight of the day was the colossal 23.150kg Kablejou, a whopping 4.955kg heavier than last year's champion fish. Chantel Mitton earned the coveted title with a remarkable catch at Mile 100 and etched her name in the history of the Angling Bonanza.
Another prized catch of the day was the biggest Kabeljou, with a weight of 21.460kg, skilfully reeled in by Henry Synman at Mile 14. Desevoy Steen secured the second prize with a commendable 12.090kg Kabeljou caught at die Olie Kol, and Rudy Horn claimed the third price with
a 4.140kg Kabeljou caught at Mile 14.
Steenbras enthusiasts faced fierce competition, with Dries de Jager emerging triumphant with a remarkable 10.305kg catch at Mile 72. Mustafa Abrahams clinched the second prize with a 6.935kg Steenbras caught at Mile 108 and Francois Wolhardt secured the third prize with a 6.075kg catch at Mile 106.
In the Dassie category, Morne Dorn-Schnirring took the lead with a 1.275kg catch at Adri se Gat. Francois Wolhardt followed closely, securing second place with a 1.225kg Dassie caught at Mile 106. Tiaan Kruger claimed third prize with a 1.105kg Dassie caught at Trappies.
The Galjoen category saw Tian Mostert dominating with the heaviest catch, weighing 1.900kg and hooked at Dup Se Gat. Rudy Horn secured second prize with a 1.890kg galjoen, also caught at Dup Se Gat, while Jaco Mile claimed third place with a 1.830kg catch at Mile 106.
In the Barbel category, Janse Van Rensburg emerged as the victor, reeling in a 0.650kg barbel fish at Tolla se Gat.
