Mupenda racks up three titles, World Cup ticket
Namibian netball star Cornelia Mupenda has capped a memorable 2026 season with three championships, while also helping the Debmarine Desert Jewels end the country's 31-year wait to qualify for the Netball World Cup.
Mupenda completed her latest triumph on Monday when she captained the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Orange Army to their first-ever Varsity Netball title with a 56-44 victory over defending champions North-West University (NWU) Eagles.
The final at the Mafikeng Great Hall in Mahikeng, South Africa, brought the curtain down on Mupenda’s Varsity Netball career in fitting fashion, as she led the Orange Army to their first title in the competition.
The Namibian’s individual influence extended throughout the campaign, having earned two First National Bank (FNB) Player of the Match awards and finishing among the finalists for the FNB Player of the Tournament accolade.
Helping seal World Cup ticket
Her Varsity Netball success came just days after another major milestone on international duty at the Africa Netball Cup in Nairobi, Kenya. The event, which wrapped up on Saturday, also served as the African qualifier for Sydney 2027.
Mupenda helped the Desert Jewels qualify for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia, securing their first appearance at the global showpiece since 1995 and only their third since making their debut in 1991.
Namibia secured their ticket after reaching the semi-finals alongside fellow African contenders South Africa, Uganda and Malawi, with Mupenda’s contribution further recognised when she was named Best Defender at the event.
The recognition added another individual accolade to a season in which Mupenda, who plays at goalkeeper (GK) and goal defence (GD), has consistently made her presence felt at the back.
Before linking up with the national team, Mupenda had already tasted championship success with UJ earlier in the year.
She captained the Orange Army to the University Sport South Africa (USSA) netball championship in July, when they defeated the University of Pretoria’s UP-Tuks 50-39 in the final.
Two earlier championships
The victory saw UJ successfully defend their USSA crown and handed Mupenda her second championship of the year.
Her first came thousands of kilometres away in Malaysia after she joined Terengganu Marvels for the 2026 Malaysia Netball Super League (NSL).
Having signed for the Marvels in February, Mupenda helped the side complete an unbeaten league campaign by defeating Johor Jewels 70-63 in the final at Stadium Juara in Kuala Lumpur in May.
The victory delivered Terengganu their first Malaysia Netball Super League championship.
Mupenda’s performances in Malaysia also earned individual recognition when she was later named Best Defender at the NSL Regional Cup, adding another defensive accolade to her 2026 haul.
Her achievements have not been limited to the netball court either.
In March, Mupenda graduated cum laude from the University of Johannesburg with an Advanced Diploma in Business Management, adding academic distinction to a year in which she has excelled both as a student and athlete.
