Namibia won their first match of the Billie Jean King (BJK) Cup second round-robin playoffs yesterday against Ghana at Olympia’s Central Tennis Courts in Windhoek.
The two nations finished third in their respective groups during the first stage of the round-robin and were placed in Pool Three to compete for the seventh to ninth place rankings in Africa Group III.
The comprehensive 2-1 victory came through wins in the singles matches, despite a loss in the doubles.
Namibia now need Ghana to lose today against Tunisia for their own tie with Tunisia tomorrow to be a battle for seventh and eighth place.
However, if Ghana beat Tunisia today, Namibia will have to defeat Tunisia to avoid finishing ninth.
Reflecting on Namibia’s first win, team captain Lesedi Jacobs was all smiles.
“I am so proud of the team and super excited because the team is doing a lot better than last year when we came tenth,” she said.
Regarding Saturday’s encounter against Morocco, Jacobs said the team will sleep in to get some rest and practise in the afternoon to be ready for the match the following day.
