Namibia juniors hold firm at African Champs
Namibia’s 19-player contingent continues its strong showing at the African Youth Chess Championships in Entebbe, Uganda, which began last Thursday, with the classical section running until Thursday before the blitz tournament follows on Friday.
In the first round, played last Friday, Namibia recorded 14 wins and five defeats.
The team improved in round two on Saturday, registering 15 wins, two draws and two losses, before dipping in round three later that day with 11 wins, one draw and seven defeats.
Rounds four and five were played on Sunday, with the team picking up nine victories and 10 losses in round four, before responding with 11 wins, four draws and four losses in round five.
Namibia’s standout performers after round five include Adam Wahengo in the U8 section, Frederick Cronje (U10), Tanatswanashe Katsvara (U12), James Dien (U12) and Christiaan Cronje (U14), who all hold strong 4/5 records, having collected four points from five rounds.
The event took a break yesterday, with players set to return to the board today for rounds six and seven at 10:00 and 15:00, Namibian time, respectively.
