Napso sports week a huge success
Strengthening school relations
The Walvis Bay Private School hosted the Napso Private Schools sports week in the harbour town from 3 to 6 May.
The Namibian Private Schools Organisation (Napso) Wintersports 2023 week saw 16 private schools participate with 3 600 participants competing in different sports codes, namely rugby, netball and hockey. This year's theme was the acronym "Lego", which stood for "Loving Every Growth Opportunity," Walvis Bay Private School sports organiser, Henry Kemp, explained.
He said: "We are here to teach youngsters to learn and to accommodate good sportsmanship and camaraderie among each other. We are creating an opportunity for learners to enjoy everything as much as possible."
Kemp said many learners also participated in other friendly sports competitions, namely chess, jukskei, tennis and archery. "The occasion was aimed at creating and increasing opportunities for learners to participate."
The Napso sports week was focused primarily on participation rather than competition, he said.
"It was for learners to have fun, get together, and build relationships."
Way Forward
Napso CEO Wouter Niehaus called for the introduction of something new for Napso every year.
"This year, Napso will be sending away five tours. There will be a winter sports team that will travel to compete in Cape Town, South Africa. After that, we will send another two athletics tours to Zimbabwe, and the highlight of the year will be the cultural tour that will travel around Namibia".
Niehaus thanked all participants as well as the parents who showed up to support their children.
Huge Success
Kemp described the event as a "huge success" and said "spirits were high and the supporters were magnificent."
"The winter sports week was mainly about getting together and growing as a unit and as a family. We are happy that the Napso family is growing and we've had a huge success".
He also extended a word of appreciation to all the sponsors, "especially Securitas," who was the main sponsor for the event.
Mr & Miss Napso
The Napso Securitas sports week also featured a Mr and Miss Napso competition.
Moria Private School's Jan Prinsloo, and Anri de Klerk, who represented Elnatan Private School, were crowned Mr and Miss Napso 2023.
Prinsloo said he didn't expect the win.
"The win hasn’t sunk in. I come from a school with only 150 learners. Today I competed with learners from different schools, and I can't believe that I won," he said.
De Klerk said she was over the moon. "I am very happy. I just want to say thank you to everyone who granted me this wonderful opportunity," she said, adding that she is glad that she could take home the win.
