Windhoek Old Boys’ first team showed dominant form when they retained their NHU Indoor Hockey Men’s Premier League title on Saturday night with a commanding 7-3 victory against Hockey School of Excellence (SoE).

Both the finalists, as well as Saints, were well positioned to win the league, but in the end Old Boys’ experience and big match temperament shone through.

SoE took the lead with a field goal by Shindume Matuzuka, but Old Boys equalised when Ernest Jacobs scored from a short corner.

Four goals in quick succession in the second quarter – converted by Matt-Reese Izaaks, Brynn Cleak, Dian La Cock and Jacobs’ second – put Old Boys in control with a 5-1 half-time lead.

SoE responded with a Delron Handura penalty, but Kieron Christ finished another Old Boys counter-attack.

Giovani Handura pulled one back for SoE from a short corner, but Matu Kavikairiua had the final say with Old Boys’ seventh goal.

The big-match experience and skill of Old Boys’ captain Ernest Jacobs and Brynn Cleak proved decisive in the outcome.

In their final league match last week, the School of Excellence stunned Old Boys 7-6, while they also edged Saints 5-4 last Friday to reach the final.

Saints, meanwhile won the NHU Women’s Premier League after finishing on top of the log (15 points), while Windhoek Old Boys (12) came second and DTS (6) third while Wanderers did not achieve a win.

With all the indoor leagues now concluded, attention turns to the NHU field hockey league which is due to start in June.
