NVF’s ex-boss returns as FIVB expert
Former Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) president Hillary Dux Imbuwa has returned to work with the federation in a capacity-building role as an International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) sports management and administration expert.
The NVF confirmed his appointment on Thursday, describing it as “a well-deserved recognition of excellence and leadership”.
In a statement, NVF chief executive officer Festus Hamukwaya said Imbuwa will deliver the FIVB Knowledge Transfer Programme under the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment Programme.
“The NVF is honoured to welcome Imbuwa, whose expertise will help strengthen [our] governance, management and administrative capacity. We look forward to the positive impact his expertise will have [locally and beyond borders],” Hamukwaya said.
Leadership record
Imbuwa has held numerous roles in volleyball over three decades, both locally and at continental level, including on the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) leadership structure.
The former teacher, player and coach has also built an extensive record in volleyball administration.
This includes serving as Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) Oshana chairperson from 2010 to 2013 and as a member of the NSSU Policy Drafting Committee from 2011 to 2013.
He is the founding chairperson of the Far North Volleyball Association (FNVA), which he led from 2010 to 2013. The FNVA ultimately served as a pilot model for developing similar volleyball structures nationwide.
From 2014 to 2017, he served as the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) volleyball commissioner. During that period, he also served as NVF vice-president from 2016 to 2017.
Rise to presidency
Imbuwa later served as interim president from 2018 to 2019 after Günter Rust, who served from 2016 to 2017, stepped down. He was elected NVF president from 2020 to 2024 and was succeeded by current president Tobias Mwatelulo.
Under Imbuwa’s leadership, volleyball was elevated from a Category C developing sport code to a Category B priority sport code by the Namibia Sport Commission, according to the NVF.
Less than three weeks after leaving the NVF presidency and being granted honorary president status, Imbuwa was appointed deputy director of resource coordination and programmes in the Directorate of Youth Development under the sports and youth ministry.
He still holds the position.
