Run Along strengthens support for parafencing movement
Multi-sport
The momentum behind para sport in the country continues to rise, with parafencing emerging as one of the country’s most promising developing disciplines. Although still at the grassroots level, the sport has shown consistent growth driven by the exceptional commitment of its athletes and coaches.Parafencing, a recognised Paralympic sport, has gained increasing attention in recent years as athletes demonstrate both passion and potential. While still relatively unknown to the wider public, the sport presents significant opportunities for participation and development among both para and able-bodied athletes.
It was this drive that led coach Shekinah Mpunwa and his team to approach the Run Along Sport Foundation seeking support to strengthen their training capacity and ensure consistent athlete participation.
After assessing their needs and observing the dedication displayed by both the coach and athletes, the foundation, through Challenged Athletes Namibia (CAN), identified an urgent challenge: the athletes’ limited ability to travel to training sessions due to transport and accessibility constraints.
In response, the Run Along Sport Foundation has committed an annual contribution of N$12 000 to assist athletes with transportation to their weekly training sessions. This support will be provided throughout the upcoming year and is intended to help stabilise training attendance, promote athlete development, and enable continued growth within the sport.
The foundation emphasised that the long-term development of para fencing in the country relies not only on equipment and coaching, but also on removing barriers that prevent athletes from accessing training environments.
The support offered aligns with the foundation’s mission to uplift para athletes and strengthen structures that enhance inclusivity in sport.
As parafencing continues its upward trajectory, the Run Along Sport Foundation remains committed to fostering environments where athletes can thrive and where emerging sports receive the support needed to reach national and international stages.
