Namibian footballers Peter Shalulile and Elmo Kambindu have both notched up four goals apiece for their respective clubs in the ongoing 2023-2024 DStv Premiership season in neighbouring South Africa.
Shalulile has displayed his proven prowess as a striker in 11 matches thus far, while Kambindu achieved his quartet of goals within seven matches.
Despite their equal goal tally, all eyes seem to be on Shalulile, whose grip on the top spot could slip if his scoring form doesn’t see a significant upturn.
Khanyisa Mayo, the standout performer from Cape Town City and last season’s Golden Boot co-recipient alongside Shalulile, currently leads the charts with eight goals, well on his way to surpassing both strikers’ total of 12 goals each in the previous season.
Shalulile’s relative goal drought since 13 December has raised concerns, particularly given his lacklustre performance during the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) representing Namibia in the Ivory Coast.
Nevertheless, Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena remains steadfast in his support for Shalulile, emphasizing the striker’s overall contributions despite recent setbacks.
Mokwena’s confidence in Shalulile’s ability to bounce back stems from his belief that top strikers experience peaks and troughs in form, highlighting Shalulile’s consistently strong overall game.
Kambindu was considered surplus to requirements and was not called up for the Brave Warriors’ continental adventure, where they reached the round of 16 for the first time.
Other notable goal scorers in the DStv Premiership winclude Bradley Grobler of SuperSport United and Lucas Ribeiro Costa of Mamelodi Sundowns, both with seven goals to their name.
Augustine Kwem of Amazulu, Tsegofatso Mabasa of Moroka Swallows, and Igraam Rayners of Stellenbosch are not far behind with six goals each.
