Street Sports crowns monthly champions
The latest Street Sports Namibia monthly finals delivered action in both Swakopmund and Windhoek last weekend, with teams competing for honours in five-a-side football and Fast5 netball.
In Swakopmund, Kolumbia FC claimed the football title after edging TFC 1 1–0 in the final. The victory earned Kolumbia FC the championship and the N$2 500 first prize, while TFC 1 finished runners-up and TFC 2 took third place.
Sherwie’s Dynamite also celebrated in Swakopmund after defeating S. Dentlinger Builders in the Fast5 netball final. The team, playing in black, secured the title and N$2 500, with Builders finishing second and Zenzi’s Netball taking third.
The finals form part of the Old Mutual-backed Street Sports Namibia initiative, which brings five-a-side football and Fast5 netball to communities in Swakopmund, Windhoek and Ondangwa.
The league stages its finals every fourth week, providing teams with regular opportunities to compete for titles and prize money, with the current season running until 20 December.
The initiative is also aimed at using sport as a tool for community development and youth engagement.
Speaking ahead of the finals, Ons Almal captain highlighted the importance of the initiative and the strong bond within his team. “We know how to play together. We know where to move, where to pass, how to stop, because we know each other personally,” he said.
He also welcomed Old Mutual’s involvement, saying the initiative gives people a positive way to spend their Sundays while encouraging them to stay active.
“It’s very important that Old Mutual participates in the location. You get a lot of people out of the streets, out of problems,” he said.
He added that the weekly games help participants stay active, refresh their minds and bring communities together.
With the first round of monthly finals now completed in Swakopmund and Windhoek, Street Sports Namibia will continue its programme across the three participating towns as teams begin preparing for the next cycle.
