Tobias mourns former world champion Tete
Namibian boxing promoter Nestor Tobias has expressed shock following the death of former South African world champion Zolani Tete.
Tete was shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane township in the Eastern Cape on Friday, aged 38. Police said the motive for the killing remains under investigation.
Tobias said the boxing world had lost an important figure who made a significant contribution to the sport during his career.
“This was very shocking to hear the news about the killing of Tete, who was a very important boxer in society.
“He was a talented fighter and I am sure that the world will always remember him as a top boxer.
“It is not always good to lose people in such a manner and my condolences go out to his family and the people of South Africa,” Tobias said.
Tete was a two-time world champion, having won the IBF junior-bantamweight title in 2014 before capturing the WBO bantamweight crown in 2017, which he held until 2019.
He also holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a world title fight, stopping fellow South African Siboniso Gonya in just 11 seconds in 2017.
Tete's final professional bout came in July 2022, when he defeated Briton Jason Cunningham in London. The result was later changed to a no-contest after Tete tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol. He subsequently received a four-year ban, which ended in July 2026.
He finished his career with 29 wins from 34 fights, including 22 knockouts, four defeats and one no-contest.
Tobias said Tete's influence extended beyond his achievements inside the ring and that his career would continue to inspire young boxers.
“I am sure that he has left a lasting legacy on many young South Africans who aspired to become top boxers.
“He is an example of a person who can become a great boxer no matter where he comes from.
“I was anticipating his return to the ring, but his journey has been cut short. May his soul rest in peace,” Tobias said.
Tete had reportedly been preparing for a return to the ring following the end of his suspension. His death has sent shockwaves through the South African and international boxing communities.
Police have since arrested four suspects in connection with the murder, with authorities indicating that the investigation remains ongoing.
