Where talent meets the kasi
Street Sports is not just a dream, but for many young people, it presents a saving pathway from many obstacles.
Boys in the hood often dream of becoming top stars, but they do not have the opportunity to pursue those dreams.
However, in 2026 they can meet at a dusty turf in Katutura to try and bring that dream to reality.
That dream became a reality when Street Sports Namibia CEO and founder Raymond Ettien gave them hope and an opportunity to stay away from crime and other challenges affecting young people in their communities.
Many of them come from dark circumstances and have experienced things they want to forget.
For these youngsters, five-a-side football has become the one thing they can rely on. It gives them a place to play, express themselves, build friendships and, most importantly, believe in themselves.
On the dusty turf, the game becomes more than just football. It becomes a way of keeping young people occupied and giving them something positive to work towards.
The players may not have access to the best facilities or equipment, but their passion for the game continues to push them forward.
The CEO and founder of Street Sports Namibia, Raymond Ettien, says he carries the hope that football can change the lives of many young people.
“I started this thing in order to help the children.
“It is very important to me because I want to give these children an opportunity to use their talent and stay away from things that can destroy their future.
“Sometimes all a child needs is someone to believe in them and give them an opportunity.
“That is what Street Sports is trying to do. We want to create a safe environment where they can play football, develop their talent and believe that they can become something in life.”
For Ettien, the dusty turf in Katutura represents more than a place where matches are played. It is a place where dreams are nurtured and where young people are given another chance to choose a different path.
Street Sports continues to use football as a tool to bring young people together, while creating opportunities for those who may otherwise struggle to find a platform to showcase their talent.
The hope is that from these matches, some of the players will eventually rise to bigger stages.
But whether they become football stars or not, Street Sports believes that helping them become more disciplined, confident and responsible young people is already a victory.
In the kasi, where opportunities can sometimes be limited, the dusty turf has become a place where talent meets opportunity — and where young dreams are given a chance to grow.
