In a celebration of four decades of volleyball excellence, the Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF), with Bank Windhoek as the primary sponsor, hosted the 40th anniversary of the Doc Tournament at The Dome in Swakopmund over the weekend.The event served as a tribute to the spirit of the sport, bringing together players, coaches, and fans from across the nation.
With 35 teams vying for victory in both men's and women's categories, the tournament showcased the talent and dedication that have defined the Federation's success throughout the years. Emphasising inclusivity, players of all ages and skill levels enthusiastically participated, embodying the sport's welcoming ethos.
This year's tournament attracted 487 players, including the youngest participants, Ndinelago Amakali (13) and Matheus Nahenda (15), in the women's and men's categories, respectively. Lameesh Harris of the University of Namibia (UNAM) Queens and Vaino Namukomba of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Raptors were honoured as the most valuable players in their respective categories.
In a display of determination, defending champions, the Namibia Correctional Service (NCS) team from Ondangwa, reaffirmed their dominance by clinching the title again, defeating the ND Raptors in a thrilling match.
The UNAM Queens also shone brightly, emerging victorious against Kudos in a captivating showdown, winning the tournament for the first time.
Expressing pride in their achievement, NCS captain Anthony Likando remarked, "We played with confidence, knowing our opponents would be formidable. Yet, we stood tall, confident in our abilities."
UNAM Queens captain Petite Elizabeth Kavenambutako echoed Likando's sentiments, describing the victory as a historic moment for their club and the tournament.
The tournament drew close to 750 spectators, who were treated to electrifying matches and dazzling displays of skill. Families, friends, and avid volleyball enthusiasts filled the stands, creating an atmosphere charged with excitement and camaraderie.
Reflecting on the event's success, NVF President Hilary Imbuwa thanked all participants, volunteers, and supporters, emphasising volleyball's role as a unifying force within the community.
Looking ahead, NVF's first vice president, Liina Matheus, affirmed the federation's commitment to nurturing the future of volleyball and providing opportunities for players of all ages to excel in the sport.
Samuel Linyondi, Bank Windhoek's Strategic Communication Manager, lauded the tournament's success, highlighting the promising trajectory of volleyball development and congratulating the NVF and all participating teams for organizing a truly spectacular event.
