Namibia’s favourite MTB race gears up for biggest edition yet
Otjihavera turns 20
What started as a wild dream in the Okapuka hills has grown into one of Namibia’s premier sporting events. The FNB Otjihavera Experience celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and is set to return from 5 to 7 September 2025 with a three-day mountain bike stage race through the breathtaking Otjihavera Mountains. The Otjihavera story began in 2005 when cycling enthusiasts Tony and Sigi Bassingthwaighte first explored the rugged terrain around Okapuka. Tony, who spent plenty of time in the bush thanks to his work selling Land Rovers, saw the potential for a mountain bike route and simply decided to make it happen. With little more than enthusiasm and a rake, the first trail was carved out along the old railway line to Leopard Lodge and back. And so, the Otjihavera Experience was born.
In the early days, the event faced its fair share of obstacles: getting landowner support, managing safety during hunting season, and even scrambling for accommodation in remote areas. Riders camped in the open and shared stories of wildlife encounters - from giraffes crossing the trail to zebras racing alongside cyclists.
National favourite
Fast-forward 20 years, and Otjihavera has become a national favourite. Today, the route remains just as scenic and adventurous, with local farmers now embracing the race, setting up water points and cheering on participants. It’s also become Namibia’s longest-running multi-day mountain bike event - and one of the most family-friendly races on the calendar.
“What we’ve built with FNB’s support is nothing short of phenomenal,” said Hanso Diehl, co-founder of Rock and Rut Mountain Bike Club. “This year’s race will include a special celebration on Sunday after the final stage.”
FNB Namibia has supported the race since the very beginning, investing more than N$650,000 over the past four years alone. “The Otjihavera Experience is more than just a race; it’s a platform that unites communities,” said Rosa Kantema of FNB Namibia. “It reflects values like resilience, commitment, and shared growth.”
President of the Namibia Cycling Federation, Tauko Shilongo, praised the partnership: “When corporates support sport, it shows our work is valued. Cycling brings people together, and 20 years of Otjihavera proves just how far we’ve come.”
This year’s edition is expected to draw 150 to 200 riders of all ages and abilities. Supporters and families are welcome to enjoy the scenic viewpoints, food stalls, and vibrant atmosphere throughout the weekend.
With its stunning trails, strong community spirit, and dedicated partners, the 2025 FNB Otjihavera Experience promises to be the most memorable yet!
