NFA, NN launch Nedbank/Namibian Newspaper Cup

The 22nd edition of the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup was officially launched in the capital on Tuesday by the Namibia Football Association (NFA) and Netball Namibia (NN).
The Omaheke region successfully secured the bid to host the event in Gobabis, scheduled to take place from Friday, 29 March to Monday, 1 April 2024. Nedbank Namibia, the headline sponsor, has returned to support The Namibian in organising this youth u/20 football and netball competition.
For the past 21 years, The Namibian has been a steadfast sponsor of NFA's Namibia u/20 football and netball players, making it the longest-running sponsorship in these sports. The competition's primary goal is to offer a platform for Namibian youth to showcase their talents on football fields and netball courts, bringing together all 14 regional football and netball teams.
The government plays a crucial role as a stakeholder by providing secure transportation for athletes from various political regions to and from the Omaheke region.
Hon. Emma Kantema-Gaomas, the Deputy Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service, emphasised that the youth u/20 football and netball competition is more than just a sports exhibition; it is an extraordinary event that unites people, builds teamwork, and increases resilience, defining Namibians.
Hon. Pijoo Nganate, the Governor of the Omaheke region, expressed the region's commitment to delivering an incredible event as the host, while Martha Murorua, the Managing Director of Nedbank Namibia, highlighted the significant impact of the tournament beyond the sports field, emphasizing their substantial investment and commitment.
Tangeni Amupadhi, the Editor-in-Chief of The Namibian, emphasised the developmental nature of the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup, which has evolved into a significant event since its inception in 2000, while Rebekka Goagoses, the President of NN, credited the competition for helping grow the sport of netball, providing opportunities for umpire training and identifying talented athletes.
Jakobus Markus, NFA Vice President, described the Cup as the pinnacle of youth football and netball development, attracting participants from all 14 regions to Gobabis over four days.
The launch included a draw to determine the teams facing off in the group stages, with official fixtures set to be announced on the official NFA and The Namibian platforms in due course.
