CRAN champions responsible e-waste disposal
The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to regulatory effectiveness by promoting a safer, more sustainable digital environment for all Namibians.Central to this mission is the development and advocacy of a responsible electronic waste (e-waste) disposal plan. Proper e-waste management protects public health, preserves the environment, and supports the growth of Namibia’s digital economy.
To raise awareness, CRAN has launched multi-platform public education campaigns, including social media, radio interviews, and stakeholder collaborations. These efforts provide citizens with vital information on recycling, safe disposal, and the environmental risks of improper e-waste handling.
Recognising the need for a collective approach, CRAN works with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism and the City of Windhoek’s Waste Management Unit. Together, they have produced consumer awareness videos that educate communities about the dangers of e-waste and promote responsible disposal practices.
As the use of digital devices continues to grow, so too does the amount of e-waste. CRAN is actively responding by encouraging safe disposal methods that reduce environmental harm, aligning with its broader mandate to adapt regulation to a rapidly evolving sector.
The Authority is also preparing to implement its role under the pending Electronic Transactions Bill and Cybercrime Bill. These legislative frameworks will enhance digital trust and security, supporting Namibia’s ambition to grow a robust digital economy.
In addition, CRAN recently contributed N$15 000 towards plastic and e-waste awareness campaigns, in partnership with Hulina Offshore Energy (Pty) Ltd. The funding supports educational initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable habits and environmental responsibility within communities.
By championing responsible e-waste disposal, CRAN helps prevent pollution, protect natural resources, and build trust in Namibia’s digital infrastructure. These efforts reflect a clear vision: a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally conscious digital future.
Through policy reform, public engagement, and collaborative action, CRAN is laying the foundation for a smarter, greener Namibia where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.
