Paratus phases out old infrastructure
By eliminating outdated infrastructure that caters to 2G and 3G connections, Paratus Namibia hopes to offer users a higher quality of service with its new mobile service, which was launched in Windhoek on Tuesday.Paratus’ latest service offers a range of competitive packages that, according to its managing director, Andrew Hall, have been designed with the user in mind. These include the Shap service which is similar to the pay-as-you-go model, the Vantage service which is similar to cellphone contracts in the market and the Elevate service which is paid monthly with unlimited data usage.
Hall explained that this launch is a result of the market shift that has occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“What started as a necessity in the Covid era – enabling customers to subscribe from their homes – has grown into a fully digital way to connect with Paratus,” he said during the event. According to Hall, this service covers 50 towns and 80 communities in Namibia, with priority given to the East-West and Windhoek-Oshakati connections as well as attention to the Windhoek-Noordoewer connection.
A new Paratus application has also been active since yesterday from 00:01 where users can manage and control all Paratus services, such as data and mobile services as well as fixed internet connections in their homes.
Paratus's calling service uses VoLTE, which according to Hall ensures better connectivity and results in fewer calls being terminated due to network problems and more stable calls being made from inside buildings, where connectivity can be erratic.
By using VoWI-FI, users of this service can call another number from any Wi-Fi network in the world at standard local rates and bypass expensive international rates.
Paratus is also Namibia's first service provider to offer e-SIM services. It is expected to enable users to obtain an e-SIM within ten minutes without visiting a Paratus branch.
“Paratus stands out by offering unique choice packages that give customers control over how they measure data, pay for services and manage performance,” Paratus said in a statement.
Going forward, Paratus will also enjoy speeds of up to 200 Mbps with fiber-based internet services and at least 20 Mbps on its SKY-FI packages, according to Hall.
